Banded agate (also known as onyx) is the stone most often used in carving cameos and intaglios. Strategically modeling onyx into spheres or cabochons to showcase a single stripe of the layer stone came into vogue in the mid 19th century. This Victorian five stone ring features banded agates of graduated size set above a scrolling gallery and flanked by fleur de lis decorations at the shoulders.
