Space for 8(!) tiny images are folded neatly into this book-shaped niello locket. The frames were intended to hold the latest photographic technology at the time: tintypes. During the Civil War, when this locket was made, tiny "gem" tintypes were wildly popular and were exchanged between soldiers, lovers, family members, and friends. Almost everyone could afford them. It helped that tintype cameras were portable: enterprising photographers set up shop at county fairs and on boardwalks, offering cheap portraits while the customer waited.
