Victorian Reverse Painted Hope Locket
Sold!

When the anchor motif appears in 19th century jewelry it represents hope. The symbolism derives from a Bible verse that describes the feeling of hope as an anchor for the soul. This remarkable locket features a sepia-tone reverse painted personification of Hope leaning against a plinth at the water's edge. Beside her, an anchor. A vibrant watercolor painting of a ship sailing out to sea inside the locket gives the scene a wonderful sense of depth and movement.
